Roll Cage:

  • The basic purpose of the roll cage is to protect the occupant if the car turns over, runs into an obstacle, or is struck by another car. It shall be designed to withstand compression forces from the weight of the car coming down on the roll cage structure and to take fore/aft and lateral loads resulting from the car skidding along on its roll cage structure.
  • The main components of the roll cage must be made of the same material, size and thickness of tubing.
  • Tubing must be a minimum diameter of 1.5″ and a minimum thickness of .095″ for cars up to 3500 pounds.
  • An inspection hole at least 3/16 inch diameter, but no greater than 1/4 inch diameter, shall be drilled in a non-critical area of all tubes to facilitate verification of wall thickness.
  • All hardware used in the mounting of structural supports shall be SAE Grade 5 or better with a 5/16″ minimum diameter.

Main Hoop:

  • The main hoop (behind the driver) shall extend the full width of the driver/passenger compartment and shall be as near the roof as possible with a maximum of 4 bends, totaling 180 degrees ± 10degrees.
  • The main hoop should start from the floor of the vehicle.
  • The main hoop shall incorporate a diagonal lateral brace to prevent lateral distortion of the hoop.
  • It is recommended that a section of tubing shall be installed horizontally from the main hoop to the diagonal brace behind the drivers seat.
  • The main hoop must be securely mounted by means of welding or bolting.
  • Mounting plates must be used if any points of the main hoop are mounted to the chassis of the vehicle.

Rear Main Hoop Supports:

  • The main hoop shall have two supports extending to the rear. Supports shall be attached as near as possible to the top of the main hoop.
  • No bends are allowed on rear supports.
  • On cars where the rear window/bulkhead prohibits the installation of rear supports, the main hoop shall be attached to the body by plates and bolted to the stock shoulder harness mounting points.
  • The rear supports must be securely mounted by means of welding or bolting.
  • Mounting plates must be used if any points of the rear supports are mounted to the chassis of the vehicle.

Door Bars:

  • The door bars must extend from the main hoop toward the front of the vehicle across all front door openings.
  • The door bars must be higher than the driver’s pelvis where the door bars cross the plane of the driver’s pelvis but no higher than the upper door hinge.
  • The door bars must be securely mounted by means of welding or bolting.
  • Mounting plates must be used if any points of the door bars are mounted to the chassis of the vehicle.

Mounting Plates:

  • Each mounting plate shall be at least .080″ thick
  • Each mounting plate must have a minimum of 6 square inches of surface area.
  • All mounting plates must be securely mounted by means of welding or bolting.
  • If bolting the mounting plates to the chassis, plates of equal or greater dimensions must be on the backside of the chassis to evenly disperse the load of the bolts.
  • Whenever possible, mounting plates shall extend onto a vertical section of the structure (such as a rocker box or door pillar).
  • Any number of tubes may attach to a single plate or to each other.
